Jugueteka

Jugueteka is a community space in the San Pablo neighbourhood of Zaragoza, where toys are lent and educational activities are organised for families.

Every two weeks, families can come to swap the toys they have borrowed and stay to play. The organisation behind the project is Viaje a la Sostenibilidad, based in the same neighbourhood. It is an original project in that it promotes a whole range of values.

On the one hand, the environmental side, by trying to educate people about consumption and promoting the reuse and repair of toys.

Toys are objects that often end up being thrown away when children’s play interests change or when they get new toys. In addition, most toys are made of plastic, which makes it even more important to adopt a circular economy approach in this market. There is also the social inclusion and sharing side, both for the children who play together and for the parents who get to know each other and/or learn to play with their children, including through the workshops organised by the Jugueteka.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

Promote the circular economy, accessibility for all, reuse and recycling through activities with families,

Educate about consumerism and the benefits of reuse: teach families how to reuse and make their own toys,

Learn to look after toys as a shared resource and thus extend the life and use of each toy,

Pass on the idea of sharing between families, which is not well accepted in many cultures.

We want to show how valuable it can be to share and look after objects used in common,

RESULTS

Educational workshops for member families where they learn new ways of playing that respect children and the environment.

A community space with more than 400 toys in the catalogue

An educational space open to all families at Santo Domingo state school

Build a society that is aware of the importance of sustainability and social inclusion, and of the fight against consumerism, especially through toys
