In Italy from Lecce to Roma
What is Brancaleone?
More than a youth exchange! Forty young people from seven different countries, crossing the country in two weeks (about 40 km per day) by mountain bike from Lecce to Roma, with backpack and sleeping bag. This project combines sport activities with tourism and social awarenessn: adventure and civic or social engagement, and -why not- charting a new tourist route in the spirit of sustainability, with potential stimulus to the local economy.
Participants will face a long journey, learning how to handle their body, their bike, their fears and expectations. Sustainability, welfare, inclusive growth and the development of technical and transversal skills are Brancaleone’s key-points. The project will grow in visibility thanks to all the different situations and places that it’s going to reach, and also with the realization of a photo and video diary with live feeds from the route.
Who can participate?
Participants must be passionate about sustainable mobility and capable, especially mentally, to face a long journey that involve both body and mind. They also should have a strong social vocation, willing to lend a hand without prejudices. This is not a bond that leaves out who is not an athlete, but a request of commitment.
What you will do?
Participants are going to ride for 40km per day and the accommodations (even if they guarantee the minimum standard of comfort and they are perfectly safe), are often going to be basic. The whole group will be provided with enough camping tents and equipment, and participants will have to prepare it almost every night with the help of the staff (that is going to follow the group in the leading car during the journey).
Participants will talk about their personal experience during the journey in a sort of personal diary, starting from an initial list of fears and expectations. They will comment and express personal feelings about the journey and about all the realities they met and helped. Each impression will be discussed in the evening, maybe in front of a fire camp, before the briefing of the next day’s activities and route.
